Eagles hold on against USC Salkehatchie, Wainwright picks up 100th win at Wake Tech

RALEIGH, NC – It was a perfect weekend for Wake Tech Men's Basketball, picking up two wins in as many days against conference opponents Denmark Tech and USC Salkehatchie. The Eagles are now 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The game against USC Salkehatchie came down to the final possession, and a missed three-point shot at the buzzer secured the 65-63 win for Wake Tech.

"I thought we gutted it out today," head coach Adam Wainwright said after the win against Salkehatchie. "That was a tough team, great effort, and they did a real good job of slowing things down and making it difficult for us. I thought we gutted it out, and gritted out a good win."

Ceejay Jordan led the Eagles with 16 points, which ties a season-high for the sophomore forward. Eddie Volkerts added 14 points with a 5-for-10 shooting performance, including three makes from beyond the arc. Zach Murphy finished with nine points, all of them coming on three-point attempts. A day earlier, Murphy set a career-high in scoring with 14 points, and he finished the weekend with six made three pointers.

The win comes less than 24 hours after the conference opener against Denmark Tech. It is one of two instances on the schedule where the Eagles will play conference games in consecutive days.

"It was tough (to prepare) because the teams were so different," Wainwright said. "Saturday, Denmark had so many athletes and were more guard-oriented. This team was so long, and big and tall, and they were able to just slow us down with their zones and they really did a good job. I am happy to get a win here."

Sunday's win also marked the 100th of the Adam Wainwright era. After the win he was asked what reaching that milestone meant to him.

"To me it means we're building a successful program here," Wainwright said. "We're always trying to build and now we're at the Division I level and we're going to hopefully keep on seeing success because this is a very well-run program. We've got great administrators and we're looking forward to the future and recruiting the heck out of Wake County, Raleigh, and all of North Carolina."

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday in Wilmington where they will take on Cape Fear. The Sea Devils are 4-2 on the season but have yet to play a conference game.

Notes:

  • Wake Tech is 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
  • Head coach Adam Wainwright picked up his 100th win at Wake Tech on Sunday, and now sits at 112 career wins in men's basketball, including his time at USC Sumter.
  • The Eagles won't play another conference home game until January 5 when they host Caldwell Tech. They play Central Carolina at home on December 13, and then have three consecutive home games (played at North Campus) as part of the Wake Tech Holiday Classic from December 28-30.
