Correll shines, bats erupt in sweep against Southwest Virginia

Raleigh, NC – Wake Tech Softball played their first home games of the 2024 season on Monday, but not where they were expecting to. After the fields were deemed unplayable at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park, the Eagles flocked over to William Peace University for an afternoon doubleheader against Southwest Virginia. The last-minute change of venue made no difference for Wake Tech, as they swept the Flying Eagles to improve to 3-5 on the season. The Eagles ended both games in just five innings, the final scores 9-1 and 17-9, respectively.

Leah Correll got the ball in game one, making her sixth start of the season. The freshman from Denver, NC put together her most dominant outing of the season, going all five innings, allowing just one run on two hits, and striking out 10 batters. The Flying Eagles did not record their first hit until the fifth and final inning.

Even though she did not need much of it, the Eagles lineup provided her with plenty of run support, scoring nine runs on 13 hits. Shortstop Kendall London finished just a single shy of the cycle, with a career-high three extra-base hits. Her batting average continues to soar incredibly high—now hitting .714, which is tied for the best among NJCAA Region 10 DII players and tied for seventh in the country. Marie Whelen and Ayla Hammonds also finished with a multi-hit game.

It was an even bigger offensive output in game two, and the Eagles needed it after Southwest Virginia jumped out to an early lead in the first and attempted to rally back in the later innings.

Starter Hailie Edmondson went 4.2 innings, allowing nine runs, however only five were earned. A few key errors extended innings and kept the Flying Eagles in the game. Emily Phelps relieved her to record the final out in the top of the fifth, which would be their final trip to the plate.

Edmondson was able to help herself on offense, hitting in the sixth spot and driving in three runs. Edmondson finished with a career-high four hits, including her first triple of the season.

The Eagles have a midweek trip to Myrtle Beach before resuming conference play against Bryant & Stratton this weekend at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park. In Myrtle Beach, they will play Vermont State Lyndon in an exhibition game, and then play two games against the USC Union Banthams. Information for the tournament can be found here.
