Eagles sweep doubleheader at Pitt in dramatic fashion

WINTERVILLE, NC – Wake Tech Softball picked up two crucial wins in exciting fashion on Saturday against the Pitt Bulldogs. The Eagles took game one in 11 innings, the longest game of the season. Wake Tech grabbed the lead in the third inning when Kinley Lamb scored the first run of the game on a passed ball. Kelly Anderson drove in two more with a two-out base hit to make it 3-0 Wake Tech.

Pitt tied it up in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run inning of their own, but they would not score for the remaining seven innings.

Leah Correll pitched all 11 innings in game one, striking out a career-high 14. She remains in the lead among Region 10 DII players in strikeouts (149).

Ayla Hammonds, who hit second in both games, totaled five hits on the day, including the go-ahead RBI single, driving in Emily Phelps, in the 11th inning of game one that led to the victory.

Riley Hutchinson led things off for Pitt in the bottom of the 11th, and reached base via walk. She advanced all the way to third on a pair of passed balls, but Correll got Madison Hall, one of the most dangerous hitters in Region 10, to fly out to Hammonds in centerfield to end the game.

Game two was full of offense, the Eagles recorded a season-high 17 hits in the 16-11 victory. Anderson recorded four RBIs, bringing her team-high total to 33 on the season. Phelps also had her best day at the plate so far this season, going 3-for-5 and driving in two runs.

Phelps got the start in the circle and threw the first four innings. Correll came back in to finish the game, throwing three innings and earning her seventh win of the season.

Pitt comes to Buffaloe Road Athletic Park on Tuesday, April 23. It is the final home game of the season for Wake Tech, and first pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
