Rachel Lea Goes Wire to Wire at Olde Liberty

Sophomore Rachel Lea shot a personal best 177 during the two-day competition to take first place in the Eagle Fusillade Challenge Women's Golf Tournament at Olde Liberty Golf Club.  With the win, Rachel becomes the first medalist for Wake Tech Women's Golf in the history of the program.

Facing cold and dreary conditions, Rachel had to rely on her mental preparation leading up to the event, "Going into the tournament, I was in the mindset of going out and having fun. I trust my practice and golf game had prepared me to play the 36 hole tournament."

The first day of the competition was tight as Rachel finished the round by shooting 94 and was tied for the lead.  The second day started with a huge momentum builder as Rachel dropped two consecutive birdies.  With her confidence soaring, she finished the second round by shooting 83- twelve strokes better than her nearest competitor.

Coach David Kristan celebrated the win by talking about Rachel's focus and mental toughness, "She's a coaches dream.  Rachel is not only a great student, but also a gifted athlete.  Over the winter she worked on her game relentlessly and it showed with this win."

Rachel will have another chance to play the Olde Liberty Golf Club when the 2016 NJCAA Region X Championships are held April 8-10.
