Two grand slams highlight Sophomore Day victory

HOLLY SPRINGS, NC – Wake Tech connected on two grand slams in the third inning leading to a 14-5 victory over Guilford Tech on Sophomore Day on Sunday afternoon at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs.

Trailing 1-0, Matt Long hit the first of two grand slams in the third inning.  Cameron Verrier hit a line drive that just cleared the right field fence for the second grand slam in the inning.

Jayden Gatling went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs as the lone multi-hit performer for Wake Tech.  Gatling had half of the Eagles hits.  Nick Badgett recorded the only other hit.

Guilford Tech allowed 12 walks with three hit batters.  Bryce Gorospe (0-1) earned the loss in his start.  He went 2.0 innings with four runs off two hits with four walks.

Nick Tiller went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Titans at the plate.

Derek Whitehurst (1-0) earned his first win of the season for Wake Tech.  He pitched one inning in relief of starter Luke Absher.  Whitehurst recorded two strikeouts and allowed one run off two hits.  Absher struck out four in the opening two innings without a hit or a run.  In all, seven Eagles saw action on the mound and recorded nine strike outs.

The Eagles return to action on Friday in the NJCAA Region 10/South Atlantic District Tournament hosted at the Burlington Athletic Stadium March 14-18.  Time and match-up is to be determined.
