Sommer stepping down as Wake Tech Esports Director

RALEIGH, NC – Wake Tech Athletic Director Brian Anweiler today announced that Chase Sommer is stepping down as the Esports Director effective August 1.

In just two seasons at the helm of Wake Tech's esports program, Sommer made an immediate impact in building the college's upstart program into a national contender.

Sommer started the Wake Tech program in December 2020 and the following spring season the Eagles won the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) championship in Overwatch.

"We want to thank Chase for all he has contributed to our new esports program," said Anweiler. "He has done a great job leading the team in competitions, but also supported the program in building an esports community."

In all, Wake Tech reached the NJCAAE championship game in four different seasons with runners-up titles in Overwatch (Fall 2021), Rocket League (Spring 2022), and Valorant (Spring 2022).  This spring, Wake Tech was the only program to have multiple teams competing in the NJCAAE playoffs in Valorant.

The program made NJCAAE playoff appearances in every season in every game.

Outside of competition, Sommer helped set-up a streaming room at the Southern Wake Tech Campus esports arena and assisted in the development of a new esports venue at the Wake Tech RTP Campus. He also presented at several local esports events and made appearances in local media interviews.

A search to replace Sommer will begin immediately.  For more information, please contact Brian Anweiler (bcanweiler@waketech.edu).
