Eagles take game one against Fayetteville Tech

RALEIGH, NC — Wake Tech softball made quick work of Fayetteville Tech in Friday's series opener. Leah Correll pitched her second complete game shutout of the season, allowing just three hits and striking out eight Trojan batters.

Kelly Anderson gave the Eagles the lead in the first with a two-run double that brought home Marie Whalen and Kendall London

Cyndia Dobbins drove home another run in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball to the pitcher, bringing home Hailie Edmondson. The Eagles fourth and final run came once again on a hit from Anderson, a single to left that scored London. Anderson and Dobbins are tied for the team lead in RBIs (24).

Head coach Keith Edgerton made some defensive changes to his starting lineup for Friday's game. London, who typically plays at shortstop, got the start in left field. Whalen, who splits time behind the plate with Brianne Foster, took London's spot at shortstop. Wake Tech played some of their best defense of the season on Friday, committing just one error. After the error was committed, London immediately threw the runner out at second base.

Correll is fifth among Region 10 Division II pitchers in strikeouts (105), and now has a 4.21 ERA across 22 appearances and 103.1 innings. This also marked Correll's sixth start without allowing a walk. While she managed to strike out eight batters, she also worked efficiently on Friday and let her defense make plays behind her.

The win moves Wake Tech into sole possession of sixth place in the Region 10 standings. They are 1.5 games behind Fayetteville Tech. The Eagles will conclude their weekend home series against the Trojans tomorrow with a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
