Eagles win in five sets over Pitt on Sophomore Night

RALEIGH, NC – Wake Tech Volleyball came from behind to narrowly defeat Pitt Community College 3-2 on Tuesday evening, finishing their regular season home schedule with a win. With the win, the Eagles moved to 15-6 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. It was the first match since September 25 (also against Pitt) that wasn't decided in straight sets.

Prior to the match, the team's lone sophomore Kennedy George was honored. George has appeared in 43 matches for the Eagles thus far over two seasons, and this year she leads the team in blocks (53) and is sixth amongst Region 10 Division II players.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair. Wake Tech jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but a 5-1 run from the Bulldogs made it 8-6. From there, neither team led by more than two until Pitt ultimately won the set 25-22.

After dropping the first set, the Eagles soared through the second set, winning it 25-15. They kept their momentum heading into the third set, which they also won 25-15. They didn't capitalize on their chance to win it in the fourth set, dropping it 25-20 and sending the match to a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set started out close and at one point Pitt led 9-8, but a 6-1 run from the Eagles put the Bulldogs away.

The Eagles head to Wilmington on Thursday for their final regular season match against Cape Fear. Currently, Wake Tech is tied for third place in the conference standings. If they remain in the top four, they will automatically advance to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region 10 tournament. That round and all subsequent rounds take place on Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 at Fayetteville Tech in Fayetteville, NC. If the Eagles drop into fifth place, they will host a first round matchup against the #12 seed in the tournament on Tuesday, October 25.
