Brian Anweiler

 

Brian Anweiler currently serves as the Dean of Student Activities and Athletics at Wake Technical Community College. He previously held the role of Athletic Director from September 2019 until January 2023, when Robin Pate assumed the position.

Before joining Wake Tech, Anweiler spent over a decade at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in the greater Washington, D.C. area, where he was the college-wide Director of Student Life from January 2009 to August 2019. In this role, he oversaw a broad range of student engagement initiatives including intercollegiate athletics, recreational programs, student media, leadership development, and academic competition teams. NOVA, one of the largest and most internationally diverse institutions in the U.S., enrolls approximately 75,000 degree-seeking students annually.

During his tenure at NOVA, Anweiler was instrumental in transitioning the college's athletic teams from club status to full NJCAA membership in 2011. He served as Acting Athletic Director from 2009 through late 2013, prior to the hiring of a full-time director.

Anweiler began his career at Tallahassee Community College (TCC), where he served in various capacities over 17 years. He started as a student assistant with the men’s basketball team and advanced through multiple leadership roles, eventually becoming Athletic Director. His time at TCC was marked by significant athletic accomplishments, including the men’s basketball team reaching the NJCAA Division I national championship game in 2006 and the softball team competing in the national tournament in 2008. Under his leadership, the college made numerous athletic facility upgrades and saw impressive academic success among student-athletes—97 went on to sign with four-year colleges and universities, and 114 received all-academic team honors.

In addition to athletics, Anweiler worked for over nine years in TCC’s Communications Office, where he collaborated closely with the media, covered major events, and served as Interim Communications Director.

From 2012 to 2019, Anweiler also served as an adjunct professor at George Mason University in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism. He taught courses such as Economics & Finance in the Sport IndustrySport Governance, and Managing Intercollegiate Athletics.

Anweiler is a 1994 graduate of Tallahassee Community College. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Media Communication from Florida State University in 1997, followed by a master’s degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Sport Administration in 2000, also from FSU.
