Wake Tech welcomed Nick Owens in June 2023 as the Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations.

Owens comes to Wake Tech with 12 years of experience in athletic administration and athletic department operations.  Most notably, Owens served as the Athletic Director at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke for four years (2011-2015).

“Nick’s extensive experience working in college athletics as an administrator, operations, coach and even as a sports official has provided him unique perspectives into all the intricacies of this role,” said Pate. “We wear a lot of different hats as a two-year college athletic administrator, and I think Nick has worn almost all of them.”

At Wake Tech, Owens will handle National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) compliance and eligibility responsibilities.  In addition, he will lead efforts to promote student success initiatives for the Eagle athletic program and support all other areas of the department.

“I’m grateful for this new opportunity and I’m excited to get to work supporting the student-athletes, coaches and all those that support athletics at Wake Tech,” said Owens. “I have a passion for helping student-athletes succeed both in the classroom and in their respective sports and help them reach their full potential academically and athletically.”

Owens is also a two-year college product having earned his associate degree from Tidewater Community College in Virginia.   He has bachelor's degree in Sport Management from High Point University, and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania.

In addition, he has a Sports Turf Management certificate with distinction from The Ohio State University.

During his time at Virginia Western, he helped organize the Virginia Community College System men’s soccer league serving as commissioner.  He is also a certified sport official in the women’s lacrosse, basketball, and soccer.  He has officiated at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels with the National Club Basketball Association (NCBBA), Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL), and American Select Lacrosse.

While at High Point, Owens was a women’s basketball team manager and video coordinator assistant.  He also helped with game day operations and sports marketing programs.   Following graduation from High Point, he worked with athletic program at the College of Southern Maryland as assistant women’s basketball coach and director of men’s soccer operations.
